The Federal Government’s handling of the 2019-2020 bushfires, particularly the Prime Minister’s decision to holiday in Hawaii while the fires were raging, had an impact on the public’s attitude towards the Government.
More than two-thirds (65%) of adult Australians asked in an ANU Poll in January 2020 thought the Government had done a bad or very bad job dealing with the fires.
The Prime Minister, Scott Morrison’s, average rating fell from 5.25 out of 10 to 3.92 between June 2019 and January 2020.
Those living outside a capital city were far more likely (21%) than those living in capitals (10%) to say they’d change their vote from the Coalition to a different party in January 2020.
While 40% of people said they would vote for the Coalition in October 2019, by January 2020 that figure had fallen to 35%.
